PATTERN SERIES Designed and created by Lynne Bury and Elizabeth Rock, our goal in producing the sewing patterns is to provide authentic looking items for the beginning Civil War seamstress with average skills, using simple construction methods and clear instructions. Those patrons with more sewing experience can easily use more authentic methods if desired. All of our patterns are taken from either period magazines or designs based on items typically pictured in numerous period photographs, or original items. We have tried to size our patterns according to modern size charts, but you should always check measurements carefully and it is always advisable to try each pattern in scrap material or muslin (which could be later used for a lining), first to ascertain correct size and fit. As with any new project ... READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS FIRST! All patterns allow for a 1/4" seam allowance. Most sewing patterns are multi-sized. All knit and crochet patterns have been converted from original publications from the mid 19th century. Modern terminology as well as needle and thread size have been suggested. 1857 Boy's Cloak - Nice
general purpose jacket. Sleeve and back are cut in one piece, sleeve is
then rolled to the front and stitched down. Picture and diagram from
February 1857 Godey's Ladies Book. Sizes 4 through 10. Price $8.00.
1864 Godey's Dress
- This basic dress is
plain in front with a large bow in back. Original called for black and
white checked poplin trimmed with blue silk. Neck is squared and slightly
open. Pictured in January 1864 Godey's Ladies Book. Sizes 4 through
8. Price $8.00.
Basic Jacket
- A basic Zouave style jacket for both boys and girls. Pictured in September
1863 Peterson's Magazine. Sizes 5 through 14. Price $8.00.
Boy's Pantaloons - These short pants are pleated into the
waistband and have a slit each side which button closed.. Pictured in
September 1863 Peterson's Magazine. Sizes 6 through 14 and runs a little
small. Price $8.00.
Childs Garibaldi -
A small version of the basic woman's waist (blouse). Sizes 7 through
14. Price $8.00.
Dress with Ties -
This style appears in numerous fashion plates and period photographs.
Often made for both small boys and girls. Usually in white muslin with
white embroidery it has a low neck line on a fitted bodice and cap sleeves tied
up to the shoulder. Sizes 7 through 14. Price $8.00.
Dress with Tucks -
Many versions of this basic dress are featured in fashion plates and period
photographs. This can be made more simple by eliminating the tucks and the
faux waistband. Sizes 4 through 9. Price $8.00.
Dress with Yoke - Another version
of the basic child's dress. Price $8.00
Girl's Apron - this could
be made in silk or muslin with eyelet. These were most often made in white
as it was easiest to launder. Price $6.00.
Infant Drawers/Underdress -
Basic undergarment for the newborn. These can be white muslin or flannel
and require no pins; everything cris-crosses and ties. Pictured in July
1863 Peterson's Magazine. Sizes Newborn to 26 lbs. Price $8.00.
Newborn Practical
Dress - This is made of
white muslin and eyelet or appliqué trims. Strictly for newborns.
Sizes S, M, L and runs a little small. Price $8.00
Paletot for Little
Girl - Taken from Godey's
Ladies Book April 1858. Sizes Toddler 4 and Child's 4 and 6. Cloth
Trimmed with velvet and silk fringe was recommended. If using heavy or
stiff fabric a tie at the waist is not needed. Price $8.00.
Pantalettes/Chemise
- Simple sleeveless, not off
the shoulder chemise and basic pantalettes. Price $8.00.

Walking
Dress Bodice - Green or blue
velvet with military trim was recommended. Front opening and pleated
postillion in back. Picture and diagram in May 1856 Godey's Ladies
