The knitting pattern for this simple hood is found in the April 1858 issue of Godey's Magazine. The design is created of ridges made by simple knit rows and purl rows, and stitches are dropped before casting the piece off of the needles. this seems to have been a popular type of knitting pattern of the era and appears in a number of other knit accessories. The vertical edges of the piece are gathered and covered by a grow grain ribbon rosette which also includes the ties for under the chin. the back edge is finished with matching fringe. Godey's recommends using two contrasting colors such as red and white. In order to make our hoods washable as well as affordable, our caps are currently made of synthetic yarns and ribbons. We would be happy to make one of 100% wool with silk ribbon for you on a custom order basis. Prices would vary depending on availability of supplies at the time. Many different colors available in stock, email us or look in our ebay store for color selection. The pattern for this knitted Sortie Cap Hood is available in our new Knit and Crochet Basics Book, and also as an individual knit pattern.
These quilted winter hoods are made from the pattern diagram appearing in the November 1859 Peterson's magazine. The description states that it is particularly warm and nice for evening wear. It is also suggested that the lining contrast well with the outside to better frame the face. Although the original hood was made of silk, ours are made of quilted lining fabrics on the outside (either cotton or taffeta)) with flannel linings which afford warmth as well as wash ability. The trims are braid with ribbon ties and a bow in the back. Our hoods are one size fits most and intended to fit over full coiffures including hairpieces. We also have available for the sale the individual sewing pattern.
